Searching for a relative’s lost medals can be an emotional experience for many families. In some cases, medals may have been sold by the rightful owner due to painful memories associated with their service or because of financial hardship. Sadly, some medals have also been stolen.
Where medals have been purchased in good faith, collectors are often aware that the medals rightly belong to the veteran or their family. Many collectors are happy to work with families to reunite them with the medals, provided they are reimbursed for the amount they originally paid. When this happens, it creates a wonderful outcome for everyone involved.
However, anyone who knowingly purchases or handles stolen medals may be committing a criminal offence. Depending on the circumstances, this could lead to prosecution for handling stolen goods, which can carry serious legal consequences.
